The Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies (LACLS) Program was re-launched in the fall of 2004. Its new name reflects the fact that the program's focus has been expanded beyond Latin America and the Caribbean to include course offerings on the Latino/Hispanic populations of the United States. The program's new direction includes a strong emphasis on community education and involvement, which we demonstrate through frequent newspaper and television communications, as well as by hosting timely public events, such as October's forum on Latino politics in the 2004 elections, and a special presentation by Sylvia Méndez, on whose behalf a lawsuit was filed that led to the desegregation of California schools in 1947. The program also offers a variety of courses on Latin America, the Caribbean and Latinos in the United States.
