Founder of the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Lerman has been commissioned by the Lincoln Center, American Dance Festival, Harvard Law School and the Kennedy Center, to name a few. Her collection of essays titled Hiking the Horizontal: Field Notes from a Choreographer was described by the Washington Post as “the source of an epochal revolution in the scope and purposes of dance art.” She received a MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship in 2002 and a United States Artists Ford Fellowship in 2011. Her newest performance, The Matter of Origins, examines the question of beginnings through dance, media and innovative formats for conversation.
